THAILAND AMID THE PANDEMIC!
Government Considering Unlocking Live Music Venues

The CCSA will directly address when and how Live Music venues can reopen which have been shutdown for 3 months.

GOVERMENT CONSIDERING UNLOCKING LIVE MUSIC VENUES

The Thai Public Health Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, spoke to the press on Friday after significant coverage in the media over the past several days regarding the estimated over 100,000+ musicians still out of work due to the entertainment and nightlife industry being closed.

He said he himself was once a musician when he was younger and that he “feels” for these people who have been without work for over three months. He stated that the CCSA and Department of Public Health are meeting this afternoon (20 June) and will specifically discuss ” live music entertainment venues” and get updated advice from the doctors advising the CCSA.

Anutin Thailand’s top health official, who back in Febuary had to apologize for using a vulgarity to disparage tourists, by demanding "Fucking farangs without masks should be kicked out of the country" said he would like to see the musicians especially be able to earn an income, but certain rules such as the crowds not being able to dance and mandatory mask wearing at live music venues would also likely be required.

PM Prayut Chan-O-Cha has also stated his wish to see all professions return to work and earning an income. This follows a public petition, especially from Thailand’s estimated 100,000+ self-employed musicians, from the entertainment industry, The Tourism Authority of Thailand, the Thai Alcoholic Beverage Business Association and even members of Parliament to allow Thailand’s world famous nightlife and entertainment industry to reopen.

The entertainment and nightlife industry is the only major exception to being reopened, as Thailand has relaxed restrictions on what authorities say is 95% of previous closure orders.

With the ban on international arrivals still in place and international tourism not expected to be allowed for weeks or months, the TAT is starting a renewed push for domestic tourism, and having the entertainment and nightlife industry reopen is a substantial part to luring potential domestic tourists out of their provinces.

Some industry estimates say the domestic Thai entertainment industry, bars and nightlife catering mainly to Thais, is as much as 80-90% of the overall entertainment industry. Some parts of the country, especially Pattaya, Koh Samui and Phuket, rely on entertainment venues for the majority of their attraction and appeal, not to mention a major source for revenue.

A meeting has reportedly been scheduled with all relevant parties and the CCSA  to directly address when and how entertainment venues can reopen. There is as yet no guarantee or firm date on when entertainment venues will reopen.

It is also not clear if the potential of “unlocking” musician related venues would lead to a larger opening of pubs, bars and entertainment venues in general or only bars that featured live music performances. Anutin did not clarify this question at the press conference earlier, but did confirm that the matter was being heard and they would see how they could potentially allow musicians to get back to work.

MENZZOO will provide updates and details as they become available.
